What's This Talk About Green Tea?

Many of you have been wondering, "What on earth are antioxidants and free radicals? I know antioxidants are supposed to be good for you, but how do they work?" Well, here's our very, very watered-down version of the answer: imagine free radicals as Robbers and antioxidants are Cops.

Free-radicals occur naturally in our body when it defends itself from environmental toxins and diseases; they are a by-product of our body's defense mechanism, accumulating mostly near the epidermis, causing a list of unwanted side-effects. The truth is, free-radicals tamper with our DNA and damage compounds in our body that alter cells; that alone is scary enough!

Research shows that free-radicals are one of the main contributors of the ever-so-horrifying aging process where our skin just continues to lose elasticity and sags and forms wrinkles. As if that's not bad enough, the list goes on: Free radicals can contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases, even cancer! And the worst part of all this is, free radicals is an inevitable process; they occur everyday and there is nothing we can do to stop it. Free radicals rob us of our health (dramatic enough?)!

But don't worry, all is not lost, there's a way to get rid of these roaming free radicals and prevent them from harming our precious body. Here's where antioxidants--our Cops, so to speak--come into the picture.

So where do these Cops come from? Our diet, of course. In actuality, getting rid of free-radicals is easier than you think. Just adopt a healthy lifestyle and eat well. The main source of antioxidants comes from fruits and vegetables. It's as easy as that. Most Americans consume just enough antioxidants to keep most of the free radicals at bay, but not quite enough. As a result, we tend to age faster and our immune system is not strong enough to protect us from catching the first cold or flu of the season.

Antioxidants, like Cops, scavenge free radicals and destroy them on site. That's how amazing they are! The more antioxidants we consume, the better we feel and look. Imagine having a face that's youthful and skin that's supple. Imagine having an ideal and healthy body weight. Imagine feeling absolutely in control of your body, emotionally and physically. Well, it's not that hard. Just eat more vegetables and fruits, and less meat and greasy, junk food. Most Americans know the consequences of what they eat, but do not pay too much attention to it because "tomorrow is another day," or they think "it's not going to happen to me." The truth is, tomorrow is not just another day, and it can happen to you. Remember, prevention is always hands-down better than cure.

You can pamper yourself with expensive skincare products all you want, but ultimately the best solution to all diseases, inflammation, and premature aging comes from within.

Now what about green tea? Green tea, also known as camellia sinensis, is not just any green herb out there that we use to brew a cup of tea. It's not an herbal tea; it's the green tea! Green tea is rich in polyphenols, a scientific term for antioxidants found in the camellia sinensis plant. Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants that seek out free radicals like a superhero and disintegrate them. By doing so, our organs function better and we age less.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), green tea does more than just killing free radicals. Here's a list of benefits of green tea that the UMMC published last year:
  1. Clinical studies suggest that antioxidant properties of green tea help prevent atherosclerosis, a disease in which plaque builds up in your arteries;
  2. Green tea lowers bad cholesterols and raises HDL (good cholesterols);
  3. Recent research suggests that green tea helps protect our body against malignant cell growth caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division;
  4. Green tea helps reduce inflammation (we'll blog more about inflammation later);
  5. Green tea helps control blood sugar levels in our body;
  6. Green tea protects the liver from damaging toxins;
  7. Research shows green tea as very effective against obesity.
