I Heart GreenTeaDaily!

Did you know that cardiovascular disease contributes to 2,400 deaths per day in the United States? In fact, research shows that heart disease is the leading killer of men and women in this country! Heart disease is a serious problem in our country and we need to do something about it.

While we can list the many causes of cardiovascular disease, we'd like to address two major causes of heart disease in America: inflammation and poor diet.

Heart Disease

You may not know it, but inflammation can be a dangerous thing, and if we don't prevent it, it can cause anything from heart disease to arthritis. Inflammation is a process in which our body's defense mechanism is attacking harmful pollutants and alien organisms and particles in our body. Believe it or not, our body plays host to a myriad of "outsiders" everyday. Some of these "outsiders" are benign, while others can be harmful. When our body detects the formation of harmful cells and organisms, our immune system begins to track them down and destroy them. Sounds great, right? Well, inflammation works wonders for us, that is until we start to eat the wrong things.

Poor Diet
When we eat, we're not just satisfying our hunger, we're actually feeding our body. Our body needs a certain amount of nutrients, minerals, and water to stay healthy (and alive). That's why a balance diet of vegetables, fruits, grains, and meat is crucial to the healthy development of our body. Fruits and vegetables feed our immune system, and when we don't eat enough of them, our immune system will start to fail. And when our immune system fails, our body's defense mechanism goes crazy, which is not a very good thing. Why? When our immune system is not well-nourished, it starts to attack anything in its way, not knowing when to stop. In other words, when we don't eat right, our immune system may start to attack our body. This is called inflammation at its worst, or autoimmune disorder.

And here's the bad news: When our immune system starts to attack our own heart and internal organs, our body will slowly fail to function, resulting in a heart attack or lupus, or kidney and liver failure, and so on.

According to Kenneth Kornman, DDS, PhD, Editor of the Journal of Periodontology and a co-author of the consensus report, inflammation is a major risk factor for heart disease. In fact, Dr. David Cochran, DDS, PhD, President of the AAP and Chair of the Department of Periodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio reports that cardiovascular disease is an inflammatory disease!

Knowing what you know now about the direct connection between your diet and cardiovascular disease, all we need to do is to start eating foods that are rich in antioxidants. Green tea is a great and rich source of antioxidants. Research shows that drinking 10-20 cups of green tea a day can provide protection against heart attack!
